perillaHi everyone, my name is Delaney Rosen.

My mom and I are on a vacation in NY, NY so she is being a slacker about writing blog posts. I volunteered to help out. At the moment I am sitting in the room doing this and she is at a place called “Knitty City.” I don’t know if any of you know this but she is really into knitting and as you might have guessed, I hate it. She normally writes about kitchen tools and that kind of thing on Thursdays but today I am going to deviate from that a little bit.

My mom and I watch a television show called “Top Chef,” and the winner of season one was a man name Harold Dieterle. Part of what he did with his winnings was open a restaurant in NY called Perilla. One of my favorite people on Top Chef out of all the seasons was Harold, and when my mom made this trip for us I immediately said we were going to Perilla. So we made a reservation for last night and went. For an appetizer we ordered a hearts of palm salad sort of thing. I tried it, which was a big step for me, but unfortunately I did not really like it; we also ordered some cream corn that I also did not like because it was very garlicky. As an Entrée I ordered steak; as a general rule we decided that we wouldn’t eat everything anywhere if we felt like we were getting full. So the thing I was very proud of at this dinner was that I left a piece of steak and all of the side because it was something I didn’t like.

My mom ordered some odd mashed potatoes thing that looked like pillows [ETA:  sheep's milk ricotta gnudi with black truffle sauce]. She ate all of that and all of her half of the salad. We also ordered the most amazing dessert that we split. It was what they called “S’mores.” It was chocolate mousse, a toasted marshmallow and a graham cracker on top, it was so good you wouldn’t even believe it. Just to give my mom some credit on how much she ate, I had lunch and she didn’t really have much.

This was one of the most exciting dinners of my life, not just because it was good but also because the chef did stick his head out of the door once or twice which was very exciting as you might imagine because he was on a show I really enjoy.

This dinner wasn’t exactly heart healthy but we both did our best not to stuff ourselves and we also did a bunch of walking there and back to the hotel. In all it was a really nice experience and if you can control your eating, I totally and completely recommend it.

awesome post. how refreshing to have a guest blogger. ;) stopping eating when i am full is something i deal with everyday at every meal. you are ahead of the game by being aware of that issue at your age!
the dessert sounded especially yummy–now if it had some peanut butter in it…….
